This is our 2 day/16 hour Basic Firefighting Course.

This course is taught as part of Basic Training, and individually for those mariners who only need the Basic Firefighting portion of STCW Basic Training.

Day 1- Classroom Portion

Day 2- Fire Field/Practical Assessments

This course satisfies the training requirements of mariners seeking their National Endorsement as Tankerman.

Successful completion of this course satisfies the: Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting per STCW Code Section A-VI/1, and all the Basic Fire Fighting assessments in NVIC 08-14; Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting per 46 CFR 11.302(a)(2) and 46 CFR 12.602(a) (2); Basic Fire Fighting per 46 CFR 11.201(h)(2) [Basic only] and 46 CFR 11.201(h)(3); and the firefighting training requirements for a national tankerman endorsement in 46 CFR 13.201(c)(3), 13.301(c)(3); 13.401(d) and 13.501(c)(3).

Basic Firefighting Student Guidelines

  • Students should be in good physical condition.
  •  Due to the strenuous nature of class activities, you should secure a professional evaluation of your physical condition prior to enrolling in this course.
  •  Full length pants, shirts that cover the shoulder and enclosed shoes are required.
  •  The total weight of a firefighter’s PPE depends on the tools needed for the job, but basic PPE (helmet, hood, pants, coat, gloves, boots and air pack) weighs about 45 pounds. Add a thermal imaging camera, radio, box light and set of irons (Halligan bar and ax) and you’re up to about 75 pounds.
  •  Some evolution’s will be performed in zero to limited visibility.
  •  Limited visibility requires the student to crawl during some evolution’s. (Estimated distance 80’.)
  •  Students must be clean shaven. Mustaches must not extend into the interface of the mask and the face.

Any applicant who has successfully completed your Basic Firefighting course (MARTOW-53) and presents our Certificate of Training within one year of the completion of training , will satisfy the: Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting per STCW Code Section A-VI/1, and all the Basic Fire Fighting assessments in NVIC 08-14; Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting per 46 CFR 11.302(a)(2) and 46 CFR 12.602(a) (2); Basic Fire Fighting per 46 CFR 11.201(h)(2) [Basic only] and 46 CFR 11.201(h)(3); and the firefighting training requirements for a national tankerman endorsement in 46 CFR 13.201(c)(3), 13.301(c)(3); 13.401(d) and 13.501(c)(3).
